Stopping sales of Felix

Due to a sudden illness, I am stopping sales of Felix. I feel that I can no longer provide the support that paying users deserve.

I’d like to thank all the users who have supported Felix over the years. I plan to make Felix a free and open source application in the future, so people can continue to use Felix. This may take a couple of months, so thank you for your patience.

Memory Serves Version 1.9 Released

I have released version 1.9 of Memory Serves.

You can download the latest version here.

The main improvements in this version are the ability to set user preferences, and specify the port to run Memory Serves on. There are also several bug fixes and performance enhancements.

To specify the Memory Serves port, either edit the “setup.cfg” file in the Memory Serves data folder (the “program data” folder or “local app data” folder, depending on whether you installed it for everyone or just yourself), or use the “--port” command-line argument. For example, to run Memory Serves on port “1234”, you could do this:

MemoryServes.exe --port=1234

Most of the user permission settings will not be very useful until the next version of Felix is released supporting logins, but you can use this to control access to the Web interface now.

Using Felix with Office 2010 on files downloaded from the Internet

Office 2010 has a new feature called Protected View. This protects you from potentially dangerous files downloaded from the Internet.

If you open a file in Office 2010 that was downloaded from the Internet, you’ll see something like the following warning at the top of the document (click to enlarge):

Office Protected View notice

One of the effects of this protection is that it disables all macros and add-ins, including Felix. If you try to use Felix in this state, you’ll get the following error:

Felix Office COM Error

In order to use Felix with this file, you’ll have to click Enable Editing in the warning box, and then close and restart Word/Excel/PowerPoint. If you had other documents open, you’ll have to close them as well before Felix will work again.

Please have a look. Is there something missing? Some feature that’s particularly important to you? Let me know!

New Felix forum

I’ve just created a forum for Felix.

Click here to go to the forum.

Participation is open to all, but some features (like posting) require user registration.

I had actually been debating with myself for some time about whether to create a forum. Felix already has a mailing list, and I felt that adding a forum might dilute the discussion. On the plus side, forums are more Google-friendly, and make it easier to follow up on conversation threads after some time has passed.

The dilemma was resolved when several Japanese-speaking users told me that they would prefer a Japanese-language forum to ask questions and discuss Felix (which is only natural). I thus decided to create a Japanese-language forum, and it then went from being a question of finding a reason to create an English-language version, to finding a reason not to.

I ended up using PunBB as the forum software. There was no Japanese localization for the latest edition of PunBB, so I took an old localized version and added the new translations myself. I plan to release my localized strings after I’ve been able to shake them out a bit.
