I have released version 1.9 of Memory Serves.

You can download the latest version here.

The main improvements in this version are the ability to set user preferences, and specify the port to run Memory Serves on. There are also several bug fixes and performance enhancements.

To specify the Memory Serves port, either edit the “setup.cfg” file in the Memory Serves data folder (the “program data” folder or “local app data” folder, depending on whether you installed it for everyone or just yourself), or use the “
--port
” command-line argument. For example, to run Memory Serves on port “1234″, you could do this:

MemoryServes.exe --port=1234

Most of the user permission settings will not be very useful until the next version of Felix is released supporting logins, but you can use this to control access to the Web interface now.

I’ve just released version 1.6.7 of Felix.

Download the latest version here.

The main new features and improvements in this version are as follows.

“One translation per source” option

PowerPoint Felix interface made consistent with Word and Excel interfaces

“Correct Translation” keyboard shortcut for Excel

1. “One translation per source” option

There is now an option to only allow one translation per source segment. By default, Felix allows any number of translations for the same source segment.

When this feature is enabled, if you add a new translation for an existing source segment in the TM, the existing record will be replaced.

To enable this feature, go to Tools > Preferences, then click on the Memory tab, and select “One translation per source segment.”

Note: You should set this option before loading any TMs. If you change it after a TM is loaded, you could get unexpected results.

2. PowerPoint Felix interface made consistent with Word and Excel interfaces

The Felix interface for PowerPoint now matches those for Word and Excel, with a translation and review mode.

3. “Correct Translation” keyboard shortcut for Excel

There is now a “Correct Translation” keyboard shortcut option for Excel. To activate this option, go to the Felix menu in Excel, and select Preferences. Then select Keyboard Shortcuts,　and assign a keyboard shortcut for “Correct Translation”. The default is CTRL+ALT+UP.

1. “Remove All” feature for Memory Manager

You can now remove all TMs/glossaries in the Memory Manager window with a single click.

2. Bug Fix: Correcting translation creates new record

There was a bug where in some cases, “correcting” a translation actually added a new entry.

3. Bug Fix: Long “add entry” entries get broken into multiple lines

4. Memory Manager: Give option to show old manager

Some users with older versions of Internet Explorer (typically corporate mandated) had problems using the features of the new Memory Manager window. There is now an option to use the old Memory Manager dialog: from the Preferences dialog (Tools >> Preferences), select the “Use old memory manager” checkbox.

5. Bug Fix: Broken css/javascript on Japanese Memory Manager window

On the Japanese version of the Memory Manager window, pages were not displayed properly due to broken CSS and JavaScript links.

6. Allow unlimited number of files in loaded history

You can now keep an unlimited number of files in the loaded history (used in the “Load previous memories/glossaires on next startup” option). The previous limit was 15 items each.

You can get the latest version here.

Below are the main improvements and bug fixes in this release.

Quality Check

Raise Felix on operation

More files can be opened simultaneously

Bug fix: Failure to import some TMX files

Bug fix: Strip Tags action

1. Quality Check

Felix now has a QC feature, which lets you perform quality checks on TMs. To enable the feature, open the Memory Manager, and click “QC Settings”.

To QC a TM, click “QC” in the Memory Manager. Enable “Perform live checking” to check TM entries as they are added.

2. Raise Felix on operation

The Office Add-ins (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel) have an option to raise the Felix window whenever a Felix command is executed (such as a lookup or retrieval).

To enable this option, go to the Felix Properties, and select the “Raise Felix window on Felix operation” checkbox.

3. More files can be opened simultaneously

The size of the “Open Dialog” buffer has been increased, so that it should be possible to open at least 500 TM/glossary files at the same time.

4. Bug fix: “Get” command in Excel erased cell if there was no translation

If the “Get” command was executed in Excel when there was no translation, it would erase the cell’s contents.

5. Bug fix: Failure to import some TMX files

Felix was failing to import certain types of TMX file.

6. Bug fix: Strip Tags action

If the Strip Tags action caused a field to become empty (i.e. it only consisted of formatting tags, and no content), then it would cause an error, aborting the operation and leaving the TM empty.

Office 2010 has a new feature called Protected View. This protects you from potentially dangerous files downloaded from the Internet.

If you open a file in Office 2010 that was downloaded from the Internet, you’ll see something like the following warning at the top of the document (click to enlarge):

One of the effects of this protection is that it disables all macros and add-ins, including Felix. If you try to use Felix in this state, you’ll get the following error:

In order to use Felix with this file, you’ll have to click Enable Editing in the warning box, and then close and restart Word/Excel/PowerPoint. If you had other documents open, you’ll have to close them as well before Felix will work again.
